Book: Mindfulness for Beginners by Kabat-Zinn

The majority of the book is short, one and two page meditations on different aspects of "mindfulness" which owes a great deal to Buddhism and Zen. These are clear, concise and well written, good for browsing - I could see keeping this one around for occasional odd-moment reminders of being in the moment. There are a couple chapters at the end where the author attempts some longer form exposition which is not as successful, but it doesn't detract from the first section.

The Complete Sailor by David Seidman

An excellent book, with enough clear, detailed explanations to help the beginner to enjoy sailing, the intermediate sailor to expand his or her horizons, and the old salt to learn a few new tricks or at least enjoy the lovely illustrations and philosophical musings. I've read a peck of books on sailing in my time and this one is one of the few I'd make room for on the narrow bookshelf of a boat. Perfect for relaxing in a protected anchorage somewhere ....
